Received this from a European associate: "Would appreciate any indication on where I could find manuals or brochures which detail the specifications for rail cars used in the transport of crude oil in the US, specifically GP30s (31,800 gallons). A company I know could use these to confirm whether they have the capability to produce and service US-spec’ed railcars and assist in mitigating some of the shortages out here." Any input would be appreciated. |

As I recall, the tank car spec. is in Section CIII of the Manual of Standards and Recommended Pratices of the Machanical Division of the AAR. |

There are two places to go for information on the new specs on crude oil tank cars. The AAR has proposed updating the specifications to PHMSA. On the AAR Tank Car Comittee docket, go to T87.6 and you will find the most recent proposal that has been put forth to PHMSA. The industry is now awaiting an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulmaking on that proposal. Most current tank crude oil tank cars being built for packing group I and II, are built a a petition standard, P-1577. |
