Hi Guys, A standard gauge steam locomotive is currently en route to Israel via ship from the UK. The Churchill 8F Group, the owner of two British built - Stanier 8F 2-8-0 repatriated from The Turkish State Railway, has sold former British War Department No.WD341 to the Municipality of Bee'r Sheva in Israel. The Locomotive will be exhibited at the new railway museum at the old narrow gauge station. The current plan is to cosmetically restore the 2-8-0 to represent Israel Railways No. 70414 in 1958. At the moment, there are no immediate plans to restore the 8f to operation. The locomotive was shipped from Southampton last month and is currently en route to the port of Ashdod by Grimaldi Lines ship Grande Europa. The orginal IR 70414 is famous for being one of the last steam locomotive to run in Israel and was the subject of a folk song and music video. Looks like a great place for the locomotive! That town has a lot of history. It's the site of the last Cavalry charge the Commonwealth ever had, when the Austrialian Light Horsemen (actually mounted infantry as opposed to classic cavlary) charged the Turk trenches to take the wells that were there. A near military disaster turned into one of the greatest feats of arms in the history of the Commonwealth when the horsement charged entrenched infantry supported by atrillery and machine guns, and suffered very few casualties in the process. The battle is still well-remembered both in modern Israel and Australia. |
