Associate Editor – Trains Magazine

DESCRIPTION
Trains, a well-respected magazine and Web brand for enthusiasts and professionals since 1940, is seeking a journalist with railroad knowledge and an innate interest in this fascinating transportation business.

DUTIES
• Write and edit stories
• Create Web content
• Collaborate with the designers to create innovative story layouts
• Manage magazine departments, working with authors to craft pieces
• Photo editing
• Evaluate story proposals and manuscripts
• Participate in social media, including Facebook and Twitter
• Travel to industry and enthusiast events and visit railroads for stories

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Excellent editing and writing skills
• Knowledge of railroading, including prior experience publishing railroad stories and specific interest in modern freight and passenger operations and technology
• Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work in a team-oriented environment
• Strong computer skills
• At least two years in newspaper or magazine journalism, including print and Web news writing, editing, and analysis
• BA degree in English, journalism, liberal arts, or substantial publishing experience.

I suspect some will read this and think "Salary requirements? You mean I get paid?!?" Actually I have some writing experience (railroads, transit and popular music) and have even been qualified as a brakeman and streetcar operator at a museum railway, but have no interest in leaving Southern California just when things are getting interesting. Be that as it may, this should be an excellent opportunity for the right person.

Steve. I don't know if Trains itself would be interested, but remember there is a sister publication, Classic Trains, that might be. Get your article ready and touch base with both editors. . .

That is a good suggestion. I don't know how long an article they would like to see. A comprehensive history could be way longer than they would want for a magazine article.

I'd be a perfect candidate except for the following... I don't have a Journalism degree... I type with the blazing speed of a box turtle.... I hate cold weather except for a token snow around Christmas.. However, I do know how to cook North Carolina barbecue and am capable of smuggling Cheerwine across state lines..... :)

Gary, Jim is still a VP here at Spencer Shops so the NC BBQ and Cheerwine may land you the job. What does Cheerwine taste like? I've been afraid to taste it.

Yeah, well, I can see that and raise it with Carolina-style BBQ from Baltimore's HarborQue, augmented with Baltimore pit beef, Chesapeake Bay crab cakes (I can get the B&O recipe), soft-shell crab sandwiches in season, and his choice of Heavy Seas, DuClaw, Olivers, Flying Dog, and/or Brewers Art beers, as he should well know from his visit here last year.

That is, should I try to fight dirty.

Of course, the real clue is knowing what the HR people can be bribed with.....

Wait, what? Who imposed Rule G in Waukesha????

Okay. Fine. A case of Stewart's Root Beer, augmented by a trip to "coal country" Pa. for A-Treat..... How about birch beer?

(True story: I once joined a friend for a "road test" of a collectible car he was buying. His road test consisted of picking up the car, driving into Baltimore to pick up both me and a huge cooler of crab cakes from Obrycki's, putting the cooler in the trunk, driving the "long way" to Connecticut via Scranton, overnighting at his brother's, then driving to Portland, where I was delighted to blunder into the Maine NG RR Museum actually using steam! Meanwhile, by prior phone call, he dropped off the crab cakes at a Portland restaurant, then we drove to Freeport and he traded in his LL Bean cowboy boots for the next half-size up..... Then we ate VERY well on lobster at said Portland restaurant as part of the deal, and I hit two brewpubs.... Then he drove back home and concluded the deal for the Audi Quattro..... at one point he left a Corvette and Camaro racing each other on the Mass Turnpike eating his dust..... when I looked at the speedometer, it was on the high side of 135.....)

Marty, Cheerwine is actually very good, think Cherry Coke only much better. Give it a try

ADM, If you want to get down & dirty by throwing microbrew beers into the mix be aware that I also have access to Roanoke Railhouse, which has 611 on the label... I know Jim likes it, we have bent elbows over a couple of pitchers....

As a North Carolinian by choice, since 1978 with a few years in Colorado interrupting....Cheerwine sucks. It's the kind of nasty sweet cough syrupy crap that shouldn't appeal to anybody over 4 years old and probably causes diabetes in one 6 pack. I put in in the avoid category along with anything in a bottle that's flourescent yellow or green in color......

Good NC beverages are made with yeast and barley, and decent local providers are getting more numerous every day. If you don't want alcohol, sweet tea can't be beat.

BBQ and a Highland Oatmeal Porter....that's good local cuisine.
