Post subject: The Reading Locomotives . . . Whats left?
PostPosted: Fri Jul 05, 2002 10:39 pm

On the way coming home from Steamtown on Thursday I came across a very interesting question. What locomotives are really left from the Reading Railroad. I know about all of the steam locomotives, but not the deisel electric locomotives. I would like to know if anyone has comprised a list of these locomotives. Any answers would be appreciated!

Hmmm... I'm sure that the Reading Co. Technical and Historical Society has the largest collection of preserved RDG diesels, but I can't account for ALL of them. I know that several former RDG Alcos are in operation on the Livonia, Avon & Lakesville in the area of Rochester NY. They no longer wear their original RDG numbers. When RDG was absorbed into Conrail, most of RDG's GP-39-2s were sold the the D&H. I don't know how many were preserved from that batch.

Of course the RCT&HS has preserved:
C630 #5308 (restored and operable)
GP-30 #5513 (restored but needs new turbocharger)
C424 5204 (operable but not in RDG paint)
RS3 #485 (not restored)
Baldwin DS-4-4-1000 #702 (not restored)
FP7a #900 (the first RDG passenger diesel)
NW2 #103 (restored and operable)
GP35 #6340 (last engine rebuilt at RDG Shops)
U-30-C #6300 (class engine)

Ohio Centrals' GP-30 #2187 is ex-RDG.

The GP39-2's all went to CSX and are active, last I heard, renumbered 4300-4319 (not in order)
RCT&HS would like to get one if they can persuade
CSX to come across!

I think you mean 3640, which is now undergoing restoration. It runs! Now for paint!
> U-30-C #6300 1 of only 5 GE's ever owned by RDG

The largest collection of UNPRESERVED RDG engines belongs to Genesee & Wyoming Industries, who has
4 SW 1001's, and at least 3 SW-1500's

The GP 40-2's are around: 3671, 3674, 3675 are
NS 3000-3002. 3672, 3673 are CSX 4400-4401

GP 35's: 3637, 3641 are on Metro North (modified)
GP 30's: 3603 Eastern Idaho 2274

3607 (CR2175) WM Scenic RY

3617 (CR 2185) Indiana Northeastern
SW 1200's: 2715 Diesel Supply

2716 Effingham RR

2719 Stockton Term & Eastern 9319
A few GP-7's, lots of SW 1500's the MP-15's, a few
SW-900's, SW-1001's. Don't forget 902-903 FP-7's owned by Phila & Lancaster Chapters NRHS.
Anthracite RR Hist. Soc, RS-3 465
Any more that I'm leaving out? I want to update my list too!

Norfolk Southern has four ex-Reading SW1001s (2100 (CR9400) 2101 (CR 9401) 2107 (CR 9407) and 2110 (CR 9410) which I might add 2110 is showing a lot of Reading Green and Yellow. I love those engines. They have EMD 8-645E engines, and even for 8 cylinders, they can still get loud when throttled up. I work next to an industial branch, and see the SWs pulling about five or six cars loaded with paper. What a sight. Well, I'm going to stop daydreaming now, and return to reality.

Sorry, but your numbers don't jibe with what I have. NS 2100 should be RDG 2625, 2101-2609,2102-2612,2103-2613,2104-2614,2105-2615,2106-2616, 2107-2618,2108-2619,2109-2620,2110-2621,2111-2622,
unless NS had a renumbering that nobody picked up.
9401 should have gone to CSX 1120, then LLPX 91.
Check those frame numbers if you can safely!
