I am working on a lightweight coach with a roof hatch to allow access to the AC evaporator. I want to re-seal it to keep the rain out. To clarify, I do not want to simply apply some goop – like Henry's Roof Repair Cement – around the outside perimeter as seen in the photo. I have removed all of the cap screws that hold the roof hatch in place, and lifted the hatch up a few inches. I now want to apply some new sealant underneath the perimeter of the hatch. This is how the RR and the Carbuilder did it.
I can't tell exactly what was used previously to seal the hatch, but it looks like it was two layers of ¼" thick x 2" wide sealing tape of some sort, with burlap (!) at the top and at the bottom. The stuff I have used previously for this type of thing was self-adhering cork insulation tape that is normally used on hot or cold pipes to keep condensation from forming. It worked real well. But naturally, the product I used in the past isn't made anymore. I have done the usual Google searches, but that gets tedious real fast. So far, butyl rubber self-adhering sealing tape, 1/8" think x 2' wide, may be the closest thing I've found to what I am looking for. I will have to use 3 or 4 layers of that, as I need to get a thickness of 3/8" to ½" thick to do the job.
Does anyone in the RYPN Nation have any other ideas for this situation that have worked well for them in the recent past?
