Anybody dealing with these? They are the forged steel stirrup-like things.....I have the drawings from the BLW S&P book, and a couple Cyclopedias, looking for more practical information for calculations.

We have those type of stays on our #90. You would calculate them based on the threaded portion like any other staybolt. As a reassurance, measure the cross-section of both legs to prove the combination of both are at least equal to the area at the root of thread of the threaded portion.

Thanks Rick. I got overthought into stressing myself about a specific materials spec for the forged portion.......but on the basis of comparison of the total cross sections, I reached the same conclusion. Nice to have it verified by somebody expert.

Over, I think it's about time and access, not my legendary unpopularity.

As far as material spec.'s, refer to ASME Sec I and Sec II.

Thank you Nathan....I'm going to accept BLW and Vulcan Iron Works only used material of appropriate spec and further that NB and Hartford made damn well sure of it before signing off, and just run the numbers as usual based on what we measure. For good measure, I'm going to see if I can get the pedigree to add to the archives.

My unfamiarity with the design made me want to learn everything about it....instead of just what I needed to know. Curiousity can be frustrating.
