Good question. I've always wondered this as well. |

I know there have been other posts, but these two were fairly easy to find: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=33069&p=173503&hilit=Hostling#p173503 viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30059&p=146877&hilit=Fire+up#p146877 If you'd like to search to see if you can find others try using the searh feature in on the upper right side of this pages header. It has lots of options so you can be really specific about what you want. Take care, Steve Piwowarski |

I was taught that from a cold start, the fire up time to full pressure is about 1 hour per foot diameter of the barrel. It can be done faster, but that does not mean it should be due. Solid fuel fires better lend themselves to a slower fire up time. I have seen an 18" diameter oil fired boiler fired up from a cold start to full operating pressure in 40 minutes; that is not so good. The fire should be kept low to allow the metal and water to heat slowly and evenly. The other posts that were referenced here will go into more detail. |
