Hello All:

I just got back from a trip down to the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum where they have just moved into some enclosed and heated restoration space, which is of course excellent news.
On the way there I took route 7 south from Rutland and passed this station:Image
I did a little research which seems to indicate that it was in fact the North Dorset station. Does anyone here know how long it was a staffed station, where it was originally located or any other information concerning the building. I have checked Jim Shaughnessy's book, but could not find any information dealing with this station in particular.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Steve Piwowarski

As I recall from passing by the station back in the 1980s (on bicycle, no less!), the station had been moved to this spot and set up to serve as a GAS station along Rt. 7; I remember old gas pumps still standing outside this building back then.

The entry at the Railroad Station Historical Society database: http://www.rrshs.org/Vermont/bennington.htm --indicated that this "station" was used primarily as a train order office.

Any chance this belonged to the Manchester, Dorset & Granville??

I don't believe so. It's design is almost identical to that of the Rutland station in Clarendon, it is just a smaller version.

Pat,

I can now say with (almost) complete certainty that the station pictured above, and the one I shared a photo of are the same station, and it was on the Rutland, not the Manchester, Dorset, and Granville. Why? That line was never completed beyond South Dorset. You can read about it here:

Thanks for the excellent photo though!

HI Stephen

You are right , about the station , it was on the main line , not the branch . I did not have a good map to work with , but regardless , your question did get and answer , glad to be of help, Pat.

This depot was the Rutland Railroad depot, it was moved closer to the road, its original location was just behind it. It was no longer listed as an agency station by the Feb 1, 1934 list of Agents and Stations. The agent stationed there from at least 1906 till the end was a J. C. Flynn. Flynn entered service with the Rutland on March 4, 1895 and was no longer listed in the Agents and Operators list in 1941.
