Post subject:  Pullman Toilet Paper Holders

As I have mentioned I'm helping restore a 1922 Pullman Co. Coach here at Spencer Shops. I am wondering if the two toilet paper holders are original.

I ask because the car was modified when it went into excursion service (circa 1970). Originally it had two rather large lounges (men's and women's) which were turned into small restrooms so five more rows of seats could be added at each end increasing the seating capacity from 48 to 68. We will maintain the 68 seat arrangement since it will go into train service. Think Thomas.

If toilet paper rolls were like today's, I'm missing part of the holder. A roll that would fit the holder pictured would have a tube about the size of an index finger.

OK, who is the toilet paper holder expert?

Thanks.

I think it is supposed to have a wooden dowel clipped between that the paper roll rolls on.

Marty

Here is a photograph of a complete Pullman toilet paper assembly, from a Pullman material catalog from the 1920's showing the unit and the parts numbers. I have a few of these as spares, and have a few on a car I own, and these are without a doubt correct.

Anyway the horizontal tubes that you are missing are ( per the few I have ) made of steel....

If you need one or two, send me a message

Thanks

Hello Dean Good picture from the "catalog" I believe, on the holders I have, the roll is brass and when you pull it apart to insert new roll one side of of the roll might be soldered into the one side. The other might have a spring. If Spencer is looking for "Parts'' I might have what you're looking for. Roger

Thought a few members might want to see the bottom bar of the toilet paper holder being discussed... Appears to be a steel tube with perhaps a brass inner tube that extends out to catch the arm and allow for the roll of paper to be installed...There is no spring device to it, it just slides into the hole in the non fixed arm and the roll of paper then goes around the tube and also interacts with the wall....
