| Post subject: | Athol Mass. B&A enginehouse |
Hi all... I just joined this outfit but I thought I would add to a topic that came up a few years ago regarding the above mentioned brick 3 stall roundhouse. The original RR began operations in 1873 but was bought by the B&A in 1880. The Athol branch was bought to allow the Quabbin reservoir to be built. The last run was June 1, 1935. Four towns were also bought and inundated to form the 412 billion gallon reservoir for the Boston area. There was a wooden enginehouse that burned and it was replaced by the current one. I'm not sure when the turntable was installed. Previous posts have shown photos of the structure and the TT pivot with stones around it. Some years back the grade was 4' lower so the aprons in front of the stalls were at tailgate height for easy truck unloading. It looks like one stall may have been made taller to accommodate a larger engine. There was one or two of the original smokejacks still suspended from the roof 20 or 30 years ago. It was just used for storage. I learned today from a local historian that an individual was or is interested in it's restoration. I will try to find out more about the project. I have photos of the interior which I need to find among the hundreds of pics I brought from Athol to Florida last summer. If I can provide any further information just ask, on or off list. Thanks, Sid Mann Sarasota FL Former Athol resident |
