Hello Board -- As his BSA Eagle Project, my son is repainting the N&W MOW Car 565719, formerly Wabash 5719, in the colors when it served as a Pullman Troop Car. It currently resides at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, Indiana. Can anyone out there in cyberland tell us what the number was for the car when it served in service for the Pullman Company? It had to be a 7000 series number -- but what was it? The musuem has been unable to locate the info -- maybe one of you experts in all things Wabash or N&W can help? Thanks -- Bjarne Henderson

Bjarne -

There may be an answer out there after all. According to what I found searching the internet, it looks like the Norfolk & Western Historical Society published a book entitled "All-Time Roster: N&W Maintenance-of-Way" as part of their Data Series (this book is Volume 3). The posting for the book states that it has "every piece of Maintenance-of-Way on the N&W system". If true, then N&W 565719 and its history, should have been included. The question is, does anyone reading RyPN have this book, and if so, can they check to see if N&W 565719 is really listed therein? Anyone?

I know this information is out there. I researched our troop sleeper #8367 about 6 years ago and I found an all time roster which I still have a copy of somewhere. I just spent 15 minutes looking for it, but to no avail. I'll keep looking and let you know.

If it still has the original Allied Full Cushion Trucks the number may still be on them just under the centre plate. However, even though our troop sleeper did have numbers on the trucks, they were different on each truck, so they obviously had been swapped out at one time. If the number is the same on both trucks I would say it is a pretty safe bet they are the trucks the car was built with.

Since this car ended it's days on the N&W, you may be in luck. The N&W Historical Society has one of the best developed archives of any of the railroad historical societies, they are worth contacting. Here's a link:

You might also check at the Pullman Library at IRM. They have a catalog that includes dispositions of Pullman built cars from company sales records..
