Post subject: | GE Traction Motors - Model GE747 |
We have a GE 80 ton locomotive with Model 5GE747 traction motors. (Locomotive was built in 1952, then rebuilt in 1989 by Chrome Locomotive.) Two of these traction motors were destroyed in transit to our museum years ago. (As well as two gear boxes and a wheel set.) We have an opportunity to acquire two used Model 4GE747 traction motors from an almost identical unit. (GE 80 ton locomotive built in 1951.) My question is: Does anyone know what the first number refers to in the model number? (4GE747 vs. 5GE747) More importantly: Are these traction motors interchangeable? Locomotive info: http://rgvrrm.org/about/railroad/rgv1654/index.htm Many thanks in advance! |

The number '5' (group #) refers to 'Locomotive Rotating Electrical Equipment' in GE parlance. This could be a main generator...traction motor...exciter. etc. I don't recall the use of the number '4' in any GE locomotive equipment model numbers. However, my guess would be that this number refers to a piece of equipment repaired/overhauled at one of the GE Apparatus Shops. Dave |
