Track down your local Snap-On tool person and show the instructions to him/her. They may be able to rent you a virtually identical torque wrench and torque multiplier. If not, they probably know who to go to. Good luck. |

I would say you are lucky if you can rent ANYTHING off of a Snap-On, or any truck. Unless they already had a used one, maybe not even then. If I paid Snap-On price for a torque wrench and it had even one scratch, I'd throw a fit. I would say it would be very odd for them to have a torque multiplier good for 1200 pounds ON the truck, unless that guy happens to have a LOT of customers on his route doing huge equipment. First, keep in mind, torque doesn't have to be exact. Consider the tolerance something like +/- 10%. Find a tension scale somewhere, something with 300+ pounds capacity. Tighten the bolts evenly by hand to 'ffn tight!!', of course make sure you don't got Brutus on there and he can make 1200 ft-lbs on a 2 foot wrench ;). Find the longest wrench that can be used, then mount the scale at a measured distance from the fulcrum. Try to keep everything to close as right angles as possible, use a come-along pulling on the scale to give it final torque. If you have a 10 foot wrench, only takes 120 pounds on the scale. 5 foot to the scale is 240 pounds. Just divide the feet (as a decimal) between the fulcrum and scale into 1200 and that's the magic number on the scale. It would be helpful to place another come-along or ratchet strap or similar around the socket or extension, pulling in opposite direction of the scale, to relieve binding. This will take longer to set up, a lot of re positioning to keep the angles correct, but most any shop will have everything needed laying around except maybe the scale. Check the calibration on the scale against known weights first of course. If done correctly, it should be extremely accurate. If you choose to use a torque wrench, you must check the calibration on it! Unless it's new and/or has a current calibration sticker, and hasn't been abused. They are incredibly delicate inside and it doesn't take much use, and almost no abuse, to put them far out of calibration. Beware cheap import wrenches! Check paragraph #2 of this post for how to check calibration in a shop environment ;) |

I, too, doubt the Snap-On guy would have one on his/her truck. I happen to know that Snap-On either makes what you need or has them made with their label applied. How do I know? I used Snap-On torque wrenches ranging from inch ounces up to crazy torque, utilizing a multiplier, on nuclear weapons systems for 20+ years. Go rent or borrow the appropriate gear. |

My recollection is that Alco 244 head bolts were tightened by measuring the stretch of the bolt. If you have a maintenance manual it will describe the procedure. Alex Huff |

CAUTION: When using a "Powerench", Fig. 4-8, with a tension indicator to tighten the large strong backs, a torque of approximately 1200 foot pounds is required at the nut. A wrench such as the "Powerench" has a gear reduction between the input and output (see nameplate of wrench) thus to obtain the required torque reading of 1200 foot pounds at the nut, 230 foot pounds must be read on the indicator. (Ratio input to output is 1 to 5.2 for the "Powerench" hence 1200/5.2 - 230 foot pounds). Attachment:

Good point Alex. Stretch can be a viable measure or specification. It depends on the fastener and the hole it's going in. In a blind hole, I'm not sure how stretch could be measured. If you had access to the other end of the hole, you could measure. However, length of the head bolts, in many cases, is specified. Does it really matter if your bolts are 1/8" longer than what it calls for? Maybe. Some bolts are designed to be used only once due to the stretch. Others are designed to go back to their original, or approximately original, length even after several application/removal cycles. Over-torque which results in undesired stretch could render your pristine-looking bolts eBay fodder. I've run RDS-1s but I am not, in any way, shape or form, a source of knowledge regarding ALCo diesels. Connecting rod bolts and main bearing bolts on 244 and 251 engines are tourqued using stretch readings; if memory serves, it is .015" for the conn rod bolts. Heads are tightened using tourque specifications for the head nuts/crabs (the large studs) and for the smaller nuts on the head, inside of the valve rocker box. Howard P. |
