This properly belongs in Flimsies, but since I don't know if I can even put something there, it has to go here. Anyway, it's a perspective on the interurbans of the Northwestern Pacific, and how it would be nice if it were still around. Of particular interest in this article are the interpretation of how the interurban portrayed itself in map form, vs. what form the map would take today. Yes, he's adapting their system map to the Beck style, which was developed for the London Underground and almost universally copied by every transit system in the world. It's a good way to connect your ridership to the system as it existed, because people instantly recognize it as a transit map. Imagine a 1926 interurban map of (pick any midwestern state) in your state. "Wow, you could get there from here?" |

Hey, map creator here. That was my intention, to bring to light the service available. The Green Line from Manor to San Rafael didn't run often, so probably should have been dashed or something, but in all I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Cartograms of old train systems are a great preservation tool. Hardly anyone likes to read the schedules, and they aren't terribly usable for those who aren't used to them. The only other remix I know of a vintage transit system was a beautiful, hand-drawn piece of the 1917 Pacific Electric system in LA. If you have scans of complete schedules and maps for vintage Bay Area rail lines, or if you have them and could scan them, I'd love to do more. This is a series, after all. |
