I'll take 4. I have a copy of 1522s bill of sale. We sure spent a whole lot more restoring her than she cost new, possibly even with the dollar comparison. I think she was 69k new. |

Was there a separate invoice for each locomotive (by builder's number) in what I would imagine was a larger-than-one-locomotive order? Can't imagine SL-SF ordering just ONE large 2-8-2. Howard P. |

I believe Allen County Historical Society in Lima, OH has 'burden sheets' that show the summary of cost of material [steel, castings, machining, purchased accessories] for at least some of the Lima built locomotives. We acquired a copy for Shay c/n 3345 showing Lima's cost to produce the locomotive was $19,576.00 + administrative costs. IMHO, the 65 heavy Mikes of Frisco's 4100 class were both aesthetically pleasing and fine matches for their profile. They then went ahead & ordered 20 more with the same cylinder dimensions, but with 235 lb. blrs. and a great deal more weight. The Depression came along and they wanted to cancel the order, but were stuck with it. They ended up using everything that they had availalble through WW2. The Frisco had 4 distinct classes of Mikes: USRA light a few 63' drivered Consols that were given a 38" combustion chamber and modern trailing truck The 4100 class heavy Mikado The 4200 class heavy Mikado |

"payable in Eastern funds". Now that's interesting: http://www.thehistorycenteronline.com/u ... ndence.pdf Apparently that was stock language of some sort. I wonder if it was a relic of 19th century banking practices or related not to the currency-but the bank location being East of the Big Mo, or in specific Federal Reserve districts. In those day, out of state, let alone of of Federal Reserve district drafts could take for ever to pay. |

For instance, Gold Dust; or Trade Dollars, which were really bullion coins, worth only the market price of their silver content, even though made by a United States Mint. More likely, it meant that rubber checks should be drawn on a nearby bank, to lessen the chance of a more distant financial house failing before the shin plaster could be physically presented for payment. The Great Western's parent company may have maintained an account at a New York City bank just for situations like this. |
