There are two diesel electric locomotives for sale on Government Liquidation, both located in Barstow on the Nebo site on the Marine Corps Logistics Base.

GL describes this one:

as a 45 tonner, but I was sure that was a 80 or 90 tonner.

It also simply calls this one:

as a 100 ton, but I'm not clear on what the actual commercial designation is.

I took photos of both this past December when I was doing a track inventory, and I know neither has been used in years, but as far as I know, both were running when they stopped using them.

The problem is that what is "classically" termed a "GE 45-tonner" is NOT this beast. The post-WW2 "45-tonner" had a pair of Cummins 150-hp HBI engines, two motors (one per truck), and siderods or chain linkage.

The classic "44-tonner" has a Caterpillar D17000 and four motors, and weight varying from 43 to 50 tons. What I'm seeing in the one ad is a classic built-for-the-Army military low-profile "44-tonner" with new engines after a Republic rebuild. The only real differences between this and a 65- or 80-tonner are the cab and a thicker, heavier frame.

The GE centercab locomotive is what was refered to as a "Drop Cab" unit. The cab was made lower for clearance. This locomotive was built new for the U S Government by GE as their builder's number 275580 and built in April 1944. U S Military number 279669.

The U S Military had many GE centercab locomotives rebuilt in the 1980's by various companies. They were converted to roller bearings, rewired, "AAR" control stands, newer engines, etc.

The EMD is a standard SW8 which the military had quite a few of. This locomotive has been upgraded with roller bearings though, as most remained on friction bearing all their life with the military.
