There has been a lot of discussion the past few months about Hot Rivets and how to install them. As we are working on a major boiler project that includes a number of riveted repairs, we decided to do a short video about some of the aspects of a rivet job. Now look, as with my other videos, this video is not a detailed step by step process for installing hot rivets. What it is however is a partial answer to many of the questions that we are asked about installing rivets and also an answer to questions posted here and on other pages. Our videos are designed to answer a few questions and give a quick glimpse of how we do it.

It is noted also that the ASME and national Board are working on new written procedures of code installations of rivets. As I attended the past meeting of the national board, we were asked to send in any suggestions of comments that we may have that may aid the process. As such, I invite all of you to send in specific notes or ideas that you may want the board to consider. Many of the board members hang out on these pages. Do you always double gun? I've found bucking from the inside and forming the head on the outside useful. Have you had problems with this approach?

My primary reason for double gunning......

I have had situations where one gun failed while the other gun kept going. In such a case, if I have rivets in the oven and I want to finish that batch, the dead gun can be a bucking gun, the other live gun can be the driving gun. In some cases, like the front tube sheet patch we installed in Switzerland last year, we had to use a bucking bar, attached to a fixture that our guys hung on to apply "up force" on the rivet as there was no space for a backing gun or even a full backing bar.

To answer your question, we use all methods on an as needed basis, but I prefer to use two guns when I can.
