Looks like a shield for a pump mounted on the pilot deck. |

The engine appears to be a Bessemer & Lake Erie 2-10-4. Looks to me like some sort of experimental rig, perhaps something to do with cinder collection? Didn't show up in any of the several B&LE publications I've seen. |

I strongly suspect that it is some sort of experimental adaptation for the burning of a really low grade of lignite/powdered coal. The T&P tried this on a couple of engines and they were all called "Snuff Dippers" |
