Apparently after being offered with buyers, another engine will probably meet an unfortunate end. From the GNGoat list at Yahoogroups:

Album by Erik Halstead
Date: 2/24/2013, Oregon Pacific at Milwaukie OR
Album Info: Some parting pictures of ex-Great Northern 187, a rare EMD NW-5 locomotive [still partially painted BN green]. Next [this] week it will be scrapped. The pictures of it are taken coupled up to a sister model GMD-1. Built some 10 years apart, and by two different divisions of EMD, they both served a useful function for the grain branchlines - GN 187, of Montana and North Dakota; ex-CN 1413, of Alberta, Sasatchewan and Manitoba.

The HUGELY relevant question:

Did any/all of the BN units retain steam generators, and is there even the shell of one to be restored in THIS loco?

My personal feeling is that a steam-generator-equipped diesel would be the perfect back-up/cold-weather power for any tourist road with steam equipment operating in cold weather..... Say. Western Maryland Scenic, Strasburg, Wilmington & Western.....

EMD's NW-5 was a pretty rare bird. I yanked out my old "Diesel Spotters Guide" and see that just 13 were built; 10 for the Great Northern. In fact, the photo in the Guide, is of GN #187 itself! How many of the other 13 still exist? Seems that some museum should have ended up with this unit.

Last I heard, the Southern unit is still working on the Mass Central, one of the Fort Street Union Depot units was at a museum in Florida, and Great Northern 192 is running on the North Shore Scenic in Duluth, Minnesota.

The two that MIGHT qualify as "preserved", depending if some Southern museum is playing "vulture" on the Mass Central:
GN #192 was sold to the Colorado & Eastern and passed from there to the Kyle Railroad, then to the Iowa Southern Railroad. Today it is in service in Duluth, Minnesota for the North Shore Scenic Railroad and resides at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=158022 Image
SOU #2100 is now working for the Massachusetts Central Railroad out of Palmer, Mass.: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=395565

A further perusal of the railfan grapevine shows that this loco (187) was re-engined with a different EMD block in recent years.

Meanwhile, here's Cargill 61, apparently former Fort st. Union Depot (Detroit) 2, later Mississippi Export 61, Railway Supply 61, then Cargill 61, now in Parrish, Florida at the Florida RR Museum: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPictur ... id=2976113

I wonder why it's being scrapped. That railroad seems to have quite a collection of odd and unusual motive power, which the owner enjoys. Is this one simply too far gone?

From another forum, posted by the units/RR's owner.

Sometimes nostolgia has to give into reality...the 187 was heavily damaged by copper thieves in the recent past. The unit was re-engined in Tacoma in 1998 by CEECO with a 8-567BC prime mover which will be salvaged and re-installed in the OPR SW-8 #801 which has an obsolete 567B prime mover which is leaking water and oil.

The trucks will be salvaged by the buyer and the rest will be recycled. OPR has removed various components such as fuel pump and control stand for future use. This unit has been offered for sale for value of components several times with no takers.

Unfortunately at this point we have no alternative but to utilize our assets to their maximum value.

I noticed some parts from this NW-5 are now being sold on Ebay.
