In an era of faceless communication via the internet and IPhone, sociability and the art of relaxed conversation, complete with nuances is a real contrast to the ridiculous pace of the isolated life away from the old concept of real communities versus subdivisions as the life most folks lead, and it was gratifying to read that essay. I think this is a under discussed aspect of museums that cater to tourists and undersold, particularly to families. An environment to relax, and intermingle with real people at a slower pace. Every experience with random seating in a dining car has resulted in enjoying the company of interesting folks. I think that sense of community is a draw for the volunteers at museums as well...maybe more so. |

Back to the color Dr. Weso came up with, it reminds me of the way Wallace Abby described Soo Line maroon in the book The Little Jewel, "Chocolate cake. The color of rich, dark, chocolate devil's food cake." Dr. Weso lived a couple miles from my shop when he was building the 1" scale model of Lincoln's funeral car, and saw the model in progress several times. Because of all the references to chocolate in the historical accounts, he painted it to basically match a Hershey bar. I'm happy more work has been done to nail down the color before the full size replica is built. |
