Former LV parlor car converted to wreck train service by the LV is the next car likely to get scrapped on the SRNJ at Winslow Jct., NJ. This car was once owned by the ARHS but was given to the SRNJ as it was being used as a parts storage car. As part of the wreck train conversion it had side doors cut into each side. It is presently owned by the SRNJ.

It's looks like nobody is stepping up for an 11th hour save. Maybe there is some organization or person who would be able to use parts from this soon to be scrapped car. Couplers, trucks, brake valves, air tanks, fixtures, etc...

There are two LV heavyweights down there:

LV 1553 - "Harriet"
LV 1554 - "Emerald"
both were John Wilkes pullman heavweight coaches, both stored in Winslow Jct, NJ, owned by the ARHS? -(2003)

both built in 1927.

Most unfortunate, but who has the greenbacks$$$$$$???? Then theres the problem with CSAO (Shared Assets) moving stuff. Who misses the REAL Conrail and their willingness? Which was before my involvment with any organization.....seems that 18 wheels is the only way to go now unfortunately.

It would be the first link, those are photos of both cars. The tool car had the added door.

I was just by there and in the car in second photo you can see the bar. Shame these behemoths can't be saved.

The side-door only increases the usefulness of the coach. I guess there just aren't any operating museums looking for innovative ways to serve the growing segment of the population requiring mobility assistance with dignity and style.

Friction (solid) bearings and bolted-on pedestals...equals high transportation costs...equals no money left to restore...equals yet another eyesore sitting around. Seems we can bemoan every loss of a "restorable car" but the financial reality is there's just not enough money available to toss at projects like these. If there were, we wouldn't be talking about it every couple of weeks.

Funny thing...well, not really...a couple of years ago I had a HW N&W MOW car (521413MW) here in Albany ready to be donated to the museum by the railroad that owned it. It had moved over NS to Albany on its own wheels about 6-8 years earlier and was supposed to become office space. Originally a coach (Pullman, I believe), in MOW service it had baggage doors cut into the sides, one on each side. On one side the baggage door was at the center and on the opposite side a baggage door was near the vestibule. Most of the windows were plated over, but the windows were still in place. Perfect for a static public meeting or dining area adjacent to the depot for future development/ expansion. No need to slice up an unmolested car to make it accessible. A quote from a contractor showed it wouldn't take that much money (just over $10k for some body and roof work and a good paint job) to make it look nice while we worked on the logistics of putting it to use. But, the Heritage Center Executive Director didn't want to fool with it, so it was given away and moved by the railroad (on rail, for a price) to another south Georgia town where the new owner apparently decided he had bitten off more than he could chew, so it was scrapped. A total waste of a perfectly good car, restorable for static use, and a possible money-making addition as well. Such lack of foresight and vision is inexcusable.

And what is equally frustrating is that with so much equipment being scrapped recently there is still an almost negligible rate of salvage of parts and components for use as separate displays. Consider all the locomotives scrapped over the last few years, how many prime movers or other components do you see being turned into floor displays? Many of the components left from a scrapping have the potential for display, and in doing so can provide additional points of interest in a museum, but few of them ever get used in that manner.

You only have to look at EMD's 25th anniversary (1947) open house displays that we have discussed on this forum in the past, for many useful ideas on how to display components.

Thank you for posting that - I had in my in my notes that this car was roller bearing equipped (as were at least 2 of the 3 P70s that were just scrapped) Also, note the cast pedestals.

Sorry for the poor and totally incorrect assumption on my part. The trucks themselves are worth salvaging if the cars cannot be saved. Maybe someone will step up.
