While a handful of tourist operations have hit the half-century mark now, how many can claim they were built literally from scratch? How many steam heads still in the business have laid hands on the Dixiana Shay or that cantankerous Stearns at some point in their careers—if not starting it on them altogether?

Despite the odds (and there have been many), Roaring Camp continues to defy them all. Congratulations to the Clark family, Tom "Iron Bar" Shreve and the rest of the current crew on keeping the fires lit; here's to another 50 years of backwoods narrow gauge steam in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

(P.S. The company's colorful history, for those interested, has been documented by Nate Goodman and Ben Kifle in their new title with Arcadia Publishing)
