LNER A4 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower and LNER A4 4489 Dominion of Canada have both finally been fully restored cosmetically. Of the two, I would say 4489 is the more drastic.

And for good measure, a shot of the two of them with LNER A4 4468 Mallard: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos- ... 3854_n.jpg

Only a month away before these three will be joined by A4 6009 Union of South Africa, A4 4464 Bittern and A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard's record-breaking run: http://www.nrm.org.uk/PlanaVisit/Events/mallard75.aspx

Why did Dominion of Canada get a bell after being restored? It looks foreign for a British locomotive!

Because the Canadian Pacific Railway gave the LNER and the locomotive a bell way back when which it carried until the engine was rebuilt with a double chimney. The chimney and bell were restored for the cosmetic restoration.

Fellow A4, long scrapped Dominion of New Zealand, carried a whistle from New Zealand Railways and 'Canada may have also carried a CPR whistle- need to check my books.

Based on some other photos I've seen, it has a Canadian 5 chime

The five A4s named after British Commonwealths all had something on them to represent their nations. Most just had the official crest of the country painted on the cab, but some had more standout features, like the whistle on Dominion of New Zealand and the bell/whistle on Dominion of Canada

Which reminds me of something I've wondered about for years. Why did the British engines have such peanut whistles on them?
I remember SR 4501 having a British whistle on her (along with her own) back in the late '60s or early '70s and Walter Dove was having a picnic playing with it.

They simply don't use them like they are used in North America.

One is lucky to hear one "toot" for departure and similar for a level crossing on approach.

Not all British whistles are peanut whistles. BR Britannia Class had chime whistles(inlcude the 71000 Duke Of Gloucester if you want) as did LNER A4s but admitedly they were a higher pitch, LMS had a hooterish type although many times they sounded as though the driver stuffed his lunch in them. Don't forget we had some engines here with rather high pitched throats such as the Reading T-1 original freight whistle and the PRR banshee. Besides, The Brits have no need to apologize for any whistle as they invented them.
