The recent comments regarding the DT&M roundhouse at Greenfield village have stirred my curiosity. Preserved roundhouses and roundhouses in need of preservation obviously have pride of place on this forum, but where are there recently constructed roundhouses?
I can think of a few in addition to the roundhouse at Greenfield Village:
Connecticut Eastern Railway Museum, Willimantic, CT
Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad, Phillips, ME
Perhaps they both count as reconstructions, because they were built, at least in part on existing foundations.
Also are there any others in the construction or planning phase?

The city of Huntsville, Alabama, constructed an elegant brick five bay roundhouse sometime in the early 1980's, as part of an ambitious museum development plan, including operation of former Mississippian Railway 2-8-0 #77 on excursions. I believe only one stall of the roundhouse actually had track, but I do remember seeing #77 inside. The North Alabama Chapter of the NRHS (now North Alabama Railroad Museum) owned the engine but parted company with the city, selling the locomotive and moving their collection to former NC&StL track nearby. I don't think there is any rail in the building now but the turntable hosts a Crown 3' gauge engine. The last locomotive in the building was a Norfolk Southern geep employed as a backdrop for an Operation Lifesaver event. The late Ed Hauber, then a trainmaster, once recalled his growing anxiety as he heard the inspection pit walls cracking under the weight of the diesel, while the speakers droned on.

I would not call the Jackson Street Roundhouse in St.Paul a "faux" roundhouse. It is on the register of historic places and has been in use since the turn of the 20th century. After the Great Norther sold the building to the Postal Service, much of the "railroad character" of the building was lost. MTM acquired the building from the US Postal Service in 1987 and has renovated about half the space as a museum. The rest of the building is being gradually returned its original purpose. Of the original 24 tracks, only one bay containing 6 tracks is currently in use for equipment maintenance and restoration. We have recently begun a project to reconstruct the track and infrastructure in a second bay to provide restoration and display space for the Museum's three steam locomotives. This will include a functional drop pit and space for large machinery typically found in a steam locomotive shop.

Alabama sure has a thing for roundhouse museums. How about those trees growing around the pit in Huntsville?

I was there in September and couldn't believe that place. What's the story with that? The bulding sure looked modern to me, I assumed they dug the pit there just for the museum or is that original to that location?

The roundhouse at the Huntsville Depot Museum is purely a modern creation, although the Memphis & Charleston station is the real deal with a fascinating history. In its earliest days, the M&C did have a roundhouse at Huntsville, but it was located on the north side of the tracks; the present building is on the south side. A few years ago construction unearthed the original turntable center pivot, which I believe the North Alabama Railroad Museum rescued as an artifact.

I suppose one more for the "Faux" list would be the Knox & Kane Railroad's four stall roundhouse at Marienville, PA, which was cobbled together with a combination of new construction and creative reuse of an existing building. Like a lot of things on the K&K, it didn't look quite right, but it served the purpose until the railroad's demise.
