Post subject:  Mid-Continent 's Wood Car Weekend *PIC*
"On August 3-14, 2002 Mid-Continent Railway Museum's exquisite and nationally recognized collection of historic wooden passenger and freight cars are the subject of a special weekend of displays. Plans are still being made. Call the museum office at 608-522-4261 for more information."

This was just released by Mid-Continent.
Hopefully it will help them to generate some interest in all of the unrestored wood cars that they have that are falling apart and/or rotting away. They have done an excellent job on the cars that they have restored so far. Hopefully we'll see more in the future.

In the previous post I linked to a photo of an excellent restoration job by Mid-Continent...
Now a photo of one of their unrestored, falling apart and rotting cars...
Hopefully she and the others like her will get some attention soon...

To clear up any misunderstandings - Mid-Continent IS actively restoring it's wood cars, as money and volunteer time permits.
Hopefully this event will raise interest in the unrestored cars to bring in both funds for their restoration, and volunteers who would like to help work on and save these cars.

My connection with the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railway #63 is only through the museum's
web site, which is giving the project excellent
documentation and photographic coverage.

Glen Gurrea is probably the top craftsman working in wooden rail car preservation today. But the project goes beyond that. Quite a number of pattern making projects have resulted in many new metal parts for the car. Things like seat frames,
platform hardware, Miller Hook couplers (ever see one of those?), smoke bells of an advanced design,
window hardware etc. She will be some car when complete. And I think they still have to do some wood and steel trucks to go under all of it.
