| Post subject: | Verona Borough, PA seeks caboose |
The Borough of Verona, PA, working with the local historical society is seeking a caboose that would become the housing for a local history display and archive. Verona is located on the former PRR Allegheny Valley Div., and is now served by the Allegheny Valley RR. The borough offices are immediately adjacent to the AVR trackage. A PRR caboose would be preferred, but any decent steel car would be considered. Contact person is Sylvia Provenza, phone 412-828-9542. Contact the Gorham (New Hampshire) Historical Society. They have a PRR N5b caboose and want to have it removed from their collection. It will require a flatbed and tractor-trailer to move it. The caboose is in good shape, other than being a painted up monstrosity. |

Also contact Pemberton NJ. There is an N5C for sale, make offer, will scrap if not taken. Looks like decent shape too. |

The irony of this was that the scrapyard in nearby Aspinwall, PA had a huge line of cabooses for sale back in the 1980's. They were reasonably priced too, I considered purchasing one for a camp, but the usual problems of loading, unloading and trucking soon brought that plan to a halt. They probably could have picked one up for a song back then, and had it hauled the few miles upriver by rail. Once again, you don't miss it until it's gone... |

I dont know how dated this info is, but this list: http://www.prrh.org/equipment/PA_cabooses.html Says several cabooses, some of them PRR, are for sale in the Lycoming Valley Railroad yard in Avis, PA. Scot |

We have no interest in disposing of the caboose and have not posted anything. I have no idea who did this. We are currently working on building steps to it and Phase 2 will be fixing up the inside so that we can give tours. Can you copy and paste the posting and email it to me, with whatever info there is about who posted it and when? Thanks. Interesting. It was he who told me they wanted to dispose of it, as it wasn't a Grand Trunk caboose, and was painted yellow and green, with maple leaves on it. He also suggested a crane would be necessary to remove it. Perhaps a policy change? Well, if you want to see a yellow and green PRR N5B caboose, you know where to find it. |

Well, on a lark I decided to call the lady in the first post about some of the cabooses (eg Pemberton) in case no one else had called her about the ones in this thread. Bad news: no one had yet. Good news: she's a wonderful lady trying to preserve her town's railroad heritage! So don't hesitate to call her if you know of any Pennsy crummys needing saving! -Paul |
