Today Cog Railway 0-2-2-0 #4 (sporting #8's cab and tender) along with coach #5 were transported from the Cog Railway by truck to the town of Twin Mountain. Here they were all lifted by crane onto a display plinth constructed at the intersection if Rt. 302 and Rt.3.

Once the train was set where they wanted it, a worker went around and welded the wheels to the rails. As far as I know, there is no plan to erect a shelter over the display. I hope they at least put a fence around it.

Is this the steamer they tried, unsuccessfully, to sell on ebay a few years back?

Was it sold or donated?

The people I talked to at the Cog told me that it was donated. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have an unmistakable display at the busiest intersection in the area just down the road from the railway either.

God, get it under cover and quick! The New Hampshire winter will eat that locomotive alive.

I believe that the engine they tried to sell a couple of years back was the #3. As Brian has noted, this is the boiler/frame from #4 with the cab and tender from #8. That combination last operated back in 2009, just before the end of regular steam.

It is interesting that in Brian's photos, the 4/8 locomotive looks cosmetically far better than it did during it's last months of operation. I recall it looking dirty, with fading paint and at least one busted cab window. It was pretty clear at the time that the railroad ownership had no regard for the historic steam equipment.
