Does anyone know of the disposition of Alco S-1 owned by the short lived Lykens Valley Railroad?? It was seen parked on the lower end of Millersburg, PA when the RR was in operation. Scrapped or working somewhere in new colors w/ new numbers??

Brother Laepple will know better than I will, but..... IF I'm to believe a bunch of stuff on the Internet: Lykens Valley 1 was one of two Alco S1's owned by the Mercersburg Railway in south-central Pa., and was leased or borrowed by Lykens Valley (same operators?). LVRR shut down in 1978, and the loco ended up at Mercersburg until 1980. Both supposedly went to Falls Creek RR near DuBois, Pa. as 61 and 62. 61, former Long Island RR 415 and D&H 3003, ended up at ISS Rail in New Castle, Pa. area, and 62 at the NY and Lake Erie in Gowanda. http://www.tamr.org/Andy_Inserra/iss.htm This RYPN report from 2008 says 3003/415/1/61 was scrapped: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25246 A report from 2005 said that the NY&LE was involved in a runaway event at the Falls Creek, was heavily damaged, and spent years being cannibalized at Gowanda for spares. I'd be surprised if it's still there. Any corrections or confirmations? |

It would appear that the unit in the photograph is an S-2, and a fine looking one at that! ETA |

I wish to thank all who responded!!!! I Posted this for a young man, who researched the history of the LVRR for a school project/report. I feel privileged to know this young man, who will be a Junior at Upper Dauphin this fall. It's rare to see a young person with such enthusiasm for History! He gave me copies of the pictures he used in his project. Old train stations, depots, bridges and train wrecks (Herndon-70's and Reading Camelback near Dornsife, PA -30's/40's) Most of the pictures were family and friends possessions!! The young man was very curious about the fate of the LVRR switcher, and I will bear the bad news to him on our next meeting. Thank You again, Everyone!! John - PYZedd |
