What is the progress of the restoration of sp 1744 and ls&i 20 at the rio grande scienic? |

On train orders there was a post of SLRG steam is finished, can anyone verify that. As I posted above they have restoration projects on the 1744 and 20, and already have an operational 18. Can anyone shed some light? |

When I was there in early Oct it didn't look as if there had been work any done on 1744 for some time and it was totally dismantled. Other than a coat of protective black paint it didn't look as if anything had been done to #20 since it arrived. After repairs to its axle box(es?) #18 seemed to be running well. It would be a great loss if the SL&RG abandons steam haulage completely. Ray. |

No steam this year for sure. I've seen nothing either way about long term prospects. |

SLRG? For the benefit of some of us less knowledgeable folks, what the heck does SLRG mean? Yes, I'm too lazy to Google it. In case you hadn't got it, I become irritated by folks who assume that everyone is a knowledgeable foamer and therefor know what an acronym means. That plus I have become more of a curmudgeon as I advance into geezerhood. ;) Thanks! |

The San Luis & Rio Grande is based in Alamosa, CO, and operates in Colorado east to Walsenburg, west to South Fork, south to Antonito, and connects with the San Luis Central just east of Monte Vista. I agree - while I admit to a passion for railroads, sometimes the reporting marks and other acronyms leave me wondering. -Jim (curmudgeon-in-training! :-) ) |

Rode an excursion behind the 2-8-0 on September 26th, 2013, its first run out of the shop in 2013, maybe for a longer time than that. It ran fine, no problems going over the mountains to Walsenburg and back. To me it ran like a fully restored locomotive, but I am no expert and have not been in touch with SLRG since then. |

A quick read of the train orders post, shows Mr. Ellis responded: Quote: Taking a break this year, lot of stuff that has to be done in Texas. So this year the role of the steam engine will be played by various diesels including 9925. So quit speculating. |
