Post subject:  Another Passenger Car Moves by Road
On October 30, Railroad Museum of New England moved a 1905 wood dining car, NYNH&H "Springfield", from Old Saybrook to Waterville, Conn. The car was unloaded and placed onto its trucks the next day. The car had been shrink-wrapped about 4 months ago, just after loading onto the road dollies at Saybrook.

Car weighs about 95,000 lbs. sans trucks, it is 83 ft long over couplers.

Howard, I have to ask, but what does Springfield look like under that shrink wrap?
On another note, would that wrap make a decent and cost-effective way of saving some of the other equipment currently parked outside?

What is the long term plan - display or operation? It is neat to see such an early diner still exists. The New Haven was really a pioneer with its dining cars through the early part of the 20th century.

Long term plan is display indoors-- too original and too fragile to operate as a "dinner train".

That's a classy looking Peterbilt taking the car to its new home. If it had to move on the highway, it's moving in style.

If you don't mind me asking, what did the shrink wrap cost? We have a couple of candidates for it here

We had a pro do it-- usually does boats, etc. along the Long Island Sound shoreline in Conn. Done in his "slow" season-- summertime. I think it was $1600 all in.

It is supposed to get some vents set into the wrap now that it's here in Thomaston.
