How are these studs mounted to the boiler? This is on a 1944 Alco. Are they threaded? through bolts? Inserts? Or something else. As you tell from the picture removing them or at least the blocks is going to be fun. Lot's of Kroil and heat.

You could check that by reading up in the ALCO steam locomtive standards.

There were 5 parts;

ALCO Standard Practices -1
ALCO Standard Practices- 2
ALCO Standard Practices- 3
ALCO Standard Practices -4
ALCO Standard Practices- 5

I don't know which part would cover boiler attachments.

Google did not return any hits on Standard practices. Any Idea where to get them?

I have them, Jack. Feel free to drop me a PM with anything I can look up for you.

Studs were installed as Kelly suggests, threaded into tapered tapped holes with the end of the stud also tapered so as to form a seal when tightened. The stud must extend compoletely through the thickness of the plate / plates into which it is installed.

I am hoping we are not making more work down the road by improper removal of the blocks and maybe the studs. Kelly, how hard is it to repair the mounting you mentioned if we damage the threads? Can you weld a stud in the hole of damaged threads or do you have to re-thread to an oversize? insert type repair?

Jack - split the nuts and then remove what they held on without damaging the studs. If the studs are damaged, you can remove the stubs by means of drilling through the centers, heat and cool and easy-out. Many modern restorations completely weld up the holes, then weld new studs to the outside surface of the boiler. Taper for the studs if you want to make new ones is 1/12, pitch 12TPI.
