Does anybody know if this Penn Central caboose survives to this day and if so, where? Where was the photo taken? Thanks.

Based upon the catenary in the background, I would speculate the location may have been the West Park Industrial Track, east of the Lorain Street crossing (RTA), on the West side of Cleveland. |

That would be a former Canada Southern 32' wood caboose, built at St. Thomas, Ont. in 1921, NYC 17981-17990, ex-CASO 23000-23099. http://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/NYC- ... ABOOSE.htm I can't find any sign it survived. |

The boarded up windows and door gives hope that it was sold for preservation. Perhaps to a private owner? Les |

I've gone through every number it ever had in "Captive Cabeese in America" (www.arches.org), and it doesn't appear. Make of that what you will. |

You may very well be right, but I know of a gentleman who owns one of the CSS&SB bay window cabooses and it appears on no preserved caboose lists that I know of. Les |

Roger Kirkpatrick, the author of the "Captive Caboose" list is one of the founding members of the Group and is a regular contributor to the List's content. He can be contacted via the List. |

Sorry to say 17990 is long gone. I was the last person to own and use it. I bought it in 1971 from NYCRR. I think the photo is the yard in Baltimore from where I bought it. The color of course was green,not blue but I guess the photo is wrong. I had the car moved on her own trucks to a private siding in Bridgehampton, NY. It was in very good condition save for a leak at a cupola/roof corner. I painted the exterior red (of course) and remodeled the interior for use as a weekend cottage. I left the stove, fold down table, and brake air pressure guauge and added plumbing for a toilet wash basin, shower, and kitchen sink, wired the car for electric heat and light and painted the interior white with a red floor. I used the car for 5-6 years. It was a big hit with my niece and nephew. I sold it to someone in Sag Harbor, NY who intended to put it on his property but town ordinances prevented that so it languished on the siding for years rotting away. It has been gone now for 30 years at least. Fond memories to be sure. Thanks for the photo. Mine are in a storage box and will post them if I can locate them. Noel |
