The coaling tower in Girard, OH that could be seen from Interstate 80 suffered a partial collapse of its steel framed coal elevator last week, and most likely NS is already formulating plans to bring the steelwork down, if not the entire tower. This tower once spanned the Pittsburgh, Youngstown & Ashtabula Railroad (PRR) main line from Youngstown to Niles as well as the extreme northern end of the Lake Erie & Eastern Railroad. It was not associated with an engine facility but mostly served as a refueling point for trains entering and leaving Youngstown.
