I was by the Nordson/ Amherst Ohio depot today and was wondering about the equipment there. I know the one is "The City of Waynesboro" but there is not any markings on the other one. It is a coach painted as C & O. Is that what it really was if so what number is/was it? Also the caboose has C & O casting trucks under it but that doesn't always mean much. I have always seen them there and never bothered to find out. |

Caboose is listed in "Captive Cabeese" as C&O 90669; another, B&O C-2282, is listed as being possibly at the "Historical Village?" in Amherst..... |

Scroll down to the B&O caboose at Sandstone Village: http://ohiofestivals.net/german-fest-amherst/ And here's the caboose and passenger cars in question that are by the depot: http://trainweb.org/amtrakpix/roadtrips ... 1012B.html Note: none of the images are mine although I'm in at least one of those pictures on the Ohio Festivals blog. I hate being in pictures! |

Those cars have been there for many years. As far as I know they were purchased directly from the C&O upon retirement circa 1971. The City of Waynesboro is a 10-6 and the coach is former C&O 1653. Both are fairly well maintained and are very original inside. They are owned by the Nordson Co., which is located next door to the depot. |

Histories of the two C&O lightweights in Amherst: City of Waynesboro: The "City of Waynesboro" was one of 75 10RM-6DB sleepers built by P-S in 1950 in Lot #6864 to Plans #4167 and #4167B. 56 were initially sold to C&O (as #2600-#2655), 4 to D&RGW (as #1270-#1273), 10 to B&O (as #7040-#7049), and 5 to IC (as #3510, 12-14, 21). Of the 56 sold to C&O, 12 were resold in 1950 (4 to ACL and 8 to IC as #3511, 15-20, 22), and 4 were resold in 1957 to B&O (as #7050-#7053). The "City of Waynesboro" was C&O #2612. The 75 sleepers from this Lot had the distinct design feature of the 6 bedrooms being located in the center of the car. #1653: 52 seat coach #1653 was one of 67 such cars built by P-S in 1950 in Lot #6856 to Plan #7600. 59 were sold to C&O as #1610-#1668 and 8 were sold to D&RGW as #1240-#1247. An additional ten Plan #7600 coaches were built for NKP in Lot #6840 (as #100-#109). Two of the C&O-owned cars were rebuilt to buffet lounge coaches in 1956 (#1610 and #1611). Three of the C&O-owned cars (#1664-#1666) were resold in 1957 to C&NW as #3483-#3485, which were again resold in 1961 to SP as #2216-#2218. Ten of the C&O-owned cars (#1656-#1663, #1667-#1668) were resold in 1958 to SAL as #6242-#6251, later SCL #5254-#5263. These ten cars were acquired by Amtrak in 1971, retaining the SCL numbers. Amtrak acquired seven of the coaches (#1642, 34, 37, 41, 43, 49-50) directly from C&O in 1971, renumbered as #5237-#5243. Amtrak also acquired rebuilt cars #1610-#1611, renumbered as #8410-#8411. Two of the D&RGW-owned cars (#1244, #1247) were resold in 1970 to PC as #3165-#3166. These two cars were acquired by Amtrak in 1971 as #5275-#5276. In 1951, D&RGW rebuilt coach #1240 to business car #100 "Wilson McCarthy". Later renamed "Kansas", the #100 remained in active use, and was retained by Ansco Investments after the UP merger in 1996. Four of the NKP-owned cars (#100-#103) were resold in 1964 to ACL as #260-#263, later SCL #5250-#5253. The other six NKP cars became N&W #1704-#1709. Amtrak acquired all ten of the ex-NKP cars in 1971 as #5244-#5253 (N&W #1704-#1709 as #5244-#5249, the ACL cars retained the SCL numbers). Sources: 1. If it happens you'll know. I heard something that is probably not for general circulation, so I will remain quiet about it so as not to spoil the opportunity. |

Kidding aside, I really do hope they go somewhere C&O friendly. I know these two are Pullman built cars, but I've always been partial to the Budd product that C&O got about the same time. Its a shame more of them aren't still around. Keep us updated as you can. ETA |

Some additional information regarding the D&RGW-owned cars: According to the Bridge Line Historical Society, Rio Grandé sold five (#1241-#1243, #1245-#1246) of these coaches to D&H in October 1967 as D&H #21-#25. D&H resold all five to Venezuela in 1972. Source: 1. BLHS D&H passenger car roster: http://www.bridge-line.org/blhs/dhpassenger.html |
