Friends: It's my sad duty to report the death, after a brief illness, of Ted Rose, widely known railroad artist, of Santa Fe, N.M. He died on Friday, July 26, after a bout with cancer that had attacked his spinal fluid. Born in 1940 in Milwaukee, Ted was an amazing talent who could coax both mood and detail from opaque watercolor. Earlier this year, I was elated when he kindly allowed me to use his painting, "Along the Susquehanna," for the cover of my book on the history of Rockville Bridge. His 2000 Indiana University book "In the Traces: Railroad Paintings of Ted Rose" contained a sampling of 61 images of his work. His paintings were featured in the May-June 1987 and November-December 1989 issues of the now-departed Railway & Locomotive Preservation magazine. His scene showing the Texas Eagle at Fort Worth appeared on the 1999 Amtrak wall calendar. Ted was a member of the American Watercolor Society and the New Mexico Watercolor Society. Besides railroad art, he also painted scenes that captured roadside culture and grain elevators. One of the little known facts about Ted's career was that while we were all enriched by his work and his talent, it was his wife Polly who really encouraged him to paint, paint trains, and paint trains as an art form rather than an illustration. Polly was the one who made it all happen and without her support Ted would not have achieved what he did, and in the process make the advocation of railroading so much richer. Friends of the East Broad top wishes to express its sincere sympathy to Ted's family and friends. He was kind enough to grant our group reproduction use of one of his prints, 'Mount Union Train', for use in our fundraising effort. I belive it has helped greatly in our drive and we thank Ted for his selflessness. Much work we will be accomplishing the next few years will be thanks to his generosity. Thanks Ted.
