Former Alco Plant Switcher S-1 #5 (painted and lettered as such) , which I believed was 'preserved', is apparently being offered for sale by a dealer. Just goes to show ya. Hmmmm... Dave |

Ummm, #5 of which railroad? Where? Is it a private owner or a bonafide museum? Oh, and how much do they want for it (in case somebody has longer term preservation plans for it? Michael Seitz Missoula MT |

The initial post is almost confused me for a second, "former Alco' S1" made me wonder if it had been rebuilt into something other than an Alco. I assume he meant one of the Alcos that was used by the Upper Hudson River Railroad in New York, the line now operated as the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad owned by Iowa Pacific Holdings. When I visited the line I was told that former UHRR equipment was bought by the S&NC. As far as being previously preserved, it depends on how one views the term, locomotives owned by a for profit entity and not a museum are typically not considered preserved. |

I fixed my post. On re-reading, it wasn't clear to me either. AFAIK, the 5 was owned by a private party or parties. It has been off S&NC rails for a while. Just throwing a 'nugget' out for future consideration by others. Dave |

Even if you think an item is "preserved" in a museum, it can still be deaccessed. |

#5 was purchased by Iowa Pacific (S&NC) from UHRR and S2 821 was also purchased from its previous owners. Last known location was North Creek NY...if it was moved out of North Creek it would have been reported by now so it is probably still there. 821 was repainted in D&H switcher black and has been recently used. |

Confirmed that it was purchased by S&NC. There appears to be a little bit of mystery as to 'being for sale.' Dave |

She's been quite a boomer the past 20 years. She's certainly a significant piece in terms of provenance even if she's just a regular S-1. Given that the ALCO plant itself has been on a 50+ year slow disappearing act she may become one of the last tangible elects of a workaday locomotive building in Schenectady. Rob |

Delaware-Lackawanna has said many times that they have all the Alcos they need and can handle. |
