Does anyone have clearance charts with weights on C & O wood cabooses? Specifically Series 906XX. Any help would be more than welcome. |

906XX series, ex-Hocking Valley cars, built 1929, light weight 41,500#, per C&O/B&O diagram sheet dated 6/1/70, as published in "Cabooses of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad" by Robert Hubler. Twenty five of these cars were transferred from C&O to B&O in 1971 as B&O Class C-8 plus two additional cars B&O Class C-9 with light weight of 40,400#. Alan Maples |

The "Freight equipment of the C&O - 1937" book shows two different 906xx cars at different times. Cars built for the Hocking Valley (1926 per the book) were renumbered to the 90603-90635 series in 1949 and these seem to be the ones Alan mentioned, two of these did go to B&O. The book does not give weight; they were 13' 6 9/16" tall (14' 1/2" over the stack), 8'10" wide and 32' 6" over pulling faces. Side windows were inset close to the cupola. There were also 906xx cars in series 90400-90680, built 1916-1924 by ACF & Huntington. Windows were closer to the ends of the car. Again, no weight given; 13' 10 3/8" over cupola, 14' 2 7/8" to top; 9' 4" wide and 33' 9" over pulling faces. In 1949 or 1950, the remaining cars were renumbered into only 90403-90431. Several were rebuilt with steel bodies, some were sold to NKP in 1941. |

Wait, there's more. That series seems to have been a catch-all at one time. In 1949, nine cars were renumbered from 903xx to 90638-90647. These had three windows per side. 14 4 5/8" tall, 9' 4 1/2 wide, 32' 7 1/2" over pulling faces. Also at that time, 23 cars were renumbered from 910xx series to 90681-90699 and 90650-90653. These were also ex-Hocking Valley with the windows inset near the cupola, and were built in 1929... perhaps these are the cars Alan noted. Two of these and 23 identical cars from the 907xx and 908xx series went to B&O in 1971. Dimensions were the same as the first group I mentioned in the earlier e-mail, but that drawing does show 9' 3" wide over the steps in additon to the 8' 10" body width. Got a photo? Nick |
