As my collection of old Baldwin magazines continues to grow, I stumbled across this article about the Grizzly Flats Railroad, from a 1947 issue of Baldwin.

With the passing of Ward Kimball (see the July 10th Brief), I thought it appropriate to scan and post the article. See it at the link below.

The text is too small to read and distorts when blown up.

As one of the caretakers of the Grizzly Flats R/R and a friend of Ward and Betty Kimball, I was pleased to have a copy of your posting.

In the 60's, as a kid growing up in San Gabriel, I would hear the steam whistle at the Grizzly Flats railroad. It didn't take much to convince dad to take me over to watch the Emma Nevada rumble up and down Ward's driveway. I remember Betty Kimball inviting us in for something cool to drink and to view Ward's toy train collection, which was very thrilling in itself.
Needless to say I was saddened by the news of his passing. The impression that he left on me, years ago, still guides me through my work within the railroad preservation community today.
The world is truly a better and happier place because of Ward Kimball's talents and contributions.
Thanks Hume for the posting. It brought back some great memories.

Thanks Hume, for posting this article. It reminds me that I need to pull out an old back issue I have of Popular Mechanics magazine. The 1940s era issue features a color cover photo and story of Ward Kimball's Grizzly Flats RR and his extensive collections. I have always been fascinated with the story of this man and his wife who had the guts and the drive to seize on opportunity and make his dreams come true, along with the help of friends and volunteers. Hope I can make it out to Orange Empire sometime and see "Emma Nevada" in person.

> I have seen some excellent black and white film footage of the Grizzly Flats in operation in a classic Disneyland TV show entitled "Where Do Stories Come From" on the Disney Channel. Walt Disney tells some of the history of the rr with some really good shots of the loco being transported, unloaded, cleaned, and operated. Some tracklaying shots are also shown.
