I'll die an old man, never having understood why people set up 'groups' on the pyramid scheme which is facebook, and make them where nobody can see them unless they 'join' it. Plenty of people don't 'do' facebook. None of them will ever get to see what you have when you set up your page like that... |

Its really simple to join just one click and i will accept you like i have with many other RYPN users, the 'Joining' thing is just to avoid spammers.....its nothing sinister, people act like its a dangerous !! Its fun and we have had some great posts. If you dont want to join then look at my Zenfolio albums, but you cant add anything interesting you may have to say or show us. http://car57.zenfolio.com/ Mike Pannell |

This, I think, is one of the primary reasons people who don't do facebook won't do so. It's good that you have an alternate link, a lot of facebook people never have that, and they're only hurting themsevles if their goal is to have people look at it. The primary problem with Facebook is its insulatory nature, so many of its users truly believe that every man, woman and child on the planet is on it, when many are not and have zero need for it. |

It is with great reluctance that I joined a professional networking web site; I have no intention of joining any public social media site under any circumstances. They can be manipulated by anybody with skills to do so for purposes of their own and the majority of the content is of little use or interest in any case. If you want to show off your good work, there are photo sharing sites available for the purpose. dave |

Oh, I am so of two minds on this. On one hand, yeah, like I say, don't post content behind walls. No Trainorders discussions, trains.com articles, NYTimes paywall content, Netflix movie links etc. It's rude to people who are not members. On the other hand, eBay is the only auction site because that's where everyone is, and likewise, Facebook is THE social media hub. Every minute you spend discussing railway preservation on Facebook is a minute not spent on RyPN, so the content moves from here to Facebook. That creates a critical mass where you join or lose out. I'd call it a necessary evil, but your friends and family will expect you to interact in the normal Facebook ways, lest they feel snubbed. So figure an hour a day looking at cat memes. That time is just gone. Nobody says on his deathbed "I wish I'd spent more time on Facebook." I have no answers. |

Jeff Lisowski wrote: I belong to a page which is for a unit I served with in the Marines. Why would "we" who served in this unit want anyone commenting from outside of it? Only people with Facebook accounts can comment on Facebook. So you're defending only from a second quartile: people a) on Facebook and b) not in your unit. You neglect a third quartile: people a) not on Facebook and b) in your unit. You throw this baby out with the bathwater for fear of that second quartile. p51 is calling that a mistake. I'd tend to agree. Let the second quartile comment. You never know what serendipity will occur. If it's unconstructive, delete it ruthlessly. The First Amendment belongs to the owner of the venue only. Quote: Public groups on Facebook have no privacy, therefore anything you say will show up in a public search engine. Google, Bing, etc. "Privacy" and "Facebook" are contradictions of terms. Facebook's privacy intrusions are insidious. They certainly track every visit you make to any website with a Facebook "like" button or any Facebook content. Understanding privacy issues is my trade, and even I don't understand all the implications. I do block Facebook's tracking to the limits of my craft. |
