Not sure if its okay to post this, but aren't these the folks wanting to rebuild the ATSF Hudson?

Something to chew on anyways. Actually, this fits into the "very good idea" department of getting rid of a "hazardous material" (creosote) and coming up with a fuel that may perform very well in steam locomotives. I hope the research goes well for the participants and that useful results are developed soon.

Yes, this is the underlying technology (torrefaction). The novelty here is in using a 'brownfield resource' as the feedstock for the torrefaction process, rather than something like renewable pulpwood.

In the early stages of the torrefaction, much of the volatile content in the creosote will come off with the other volatiles removed in the forrefaction process -- so few additional stages of processing would be necessary in addition to those required already.

Not directly connected with the Project 130 activity, in case anyone was thinking that pelletized railroad ties were going to be tried as fuel...
