This one caught me off guard, nice to see them getting in the spirit, I do wish they had gone with the smaller block lettering instead of the large CN "noodle" logo, but other than that minor gripe it's pretty neat.

If I recall correctly, those are ex Illinois Central units used on their executive train. They were painted Green and Gold, then at one point they were painted Red/Black/White but if that is a recent picture I guess they are back to Green and Gold.

Historically CN never rostered any E-Units.

It looks much better than their current roster scheme, although I don't see the essential maple leaf logo. Only other comment is, an E unit is NOT a 4-8-4 .

Believe it or not, there are fewer E units ever owned by a Canadian road than there are surviving 4-8-4's in Canada today! (8 Northers still exist in the Great White North, while CPR owned 3 E units and CN has 4).

The repainting likely was done so as to match the two IC business cars that have been assimilated. Both the IC 800653 (Track Inspection car) and IC 800413 (LW business car) have been repainted into CN green and given names that formerly were carried by previous CN cars that were sold to the Canadian Pacific. What is interesting to me is that the two cars still carry "IC" reporting marks.

Here are a few links to the repaints:

As a graphic/logo designer, I can't say I'm fond of how the overly-large CN "noodle" smooshes down the black band on the side. It would have been better to keep the black band straight all the way across and put the CN logo above it, and slightly smaller.

I am recalled of a comment once shared:
"Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

The color scheme is nice and it been nicely adapted to the locomotive. The "noodle" was inappropriate for the heritage colors. A red maple leaf would have been terrific.

I can't help wonder if the reason for the size of the noodle is that they just used a stencil off the shelf.

Other than the outsize (relative to the rest of the paint) noodle, the locomotive is very well done.

One item that caught my eye was that all of the portholes on these E-units are gone. Any thoughts?

I believe they were removed when the unit was rebuilt by Morrison Knudson for Chicago commuter service.

Ex-IC 103, exx-BN 9903, exxx-BN 9940, nee-CB&Q 9940A.

I have to say that I liked the earlier heritage incarnation better...

I personally like the new incarnation. It's a good blend of old and new. It's not so much a heritage unit as it a new take on passenger equipment, like the Iowa Pacific equipment.

CN has four E9Au's from Metra/BN/CBQ. 100 and 101 are in IC colors and match the IC business cars. 102 and 103 and the CN business cars were previously in the green and gold with the maple leaf logo, and then the engines were painted in a version of the standard CN paint and the business cars were painted red and white. When they repainted, I read a rumor that one of the officers did not care for the repaint, and that some of the business cars might have remained green and gold. So it looks like they are going back to green and gold, but decided to use the awful oversize logo. It ruins the paint scheme's lines. There has to have been a better way to do it.
