I've been putting together a page on small, obscure, and forgotten railroads of Alaska over the past year or so. Much of this was a spin-off from trying to find information on one specific mine railroad. During my research I found little on my original target, but kept finding lines that were not mentioned in any books or websites. The link is: http://saveitforparts.wordpress.com/pro ... of-alaska/ The project is still a bit disorganized and dynamic, I update each section as new information comes up. It's one giant page right now, so anyone still using dial-up will hate me. This could evolve into something more formal if I find the time and resources. I have largely ignored the better-known railroads in Alaska, as others have done a good job documenting those and I don't feel qualified to repeat their efforts. I have also included some lines which really push the edge of what could be called a railroad. As I mention on the page, sometimes books and articles will refer to a line that's 90% inside a mine as a "railroad", while calling a surface line with small steam locomotives a "tramway". I find all of these interesting, and have been fairly liberal with what's included on the site. I'm always excited to get new info on this, so if anyone has details, corrections, rumors, or hints on any of the small lines I've written about (or any I've overlooked), please let me know! |

I strongly recommend Gabe's site... Too many times we forget that there is more to railroads than heavy railroading... Light tramways were used in many places... Randy |
