While recupperating from surgery, one of our part timers was bored and wanted something "light duty" to occupy himself with.
We gave him all of the Daily Inspection Reports and Daily Water Chemistry charts for our steam locomotives to compile the mileage (approximate) on each of them.
Over the 1992-2012 time period, our No.40 accumulated a bit over 100,000 road miles (we don't track yard or switching mileage).
We finished a major overhaul of No. 40's Running and Driving Gear in 1992. This work included new driving axles, quartering the wheels, new driver tires, new crank pins & rod bearings, refitting crown brasses & repairs to driving boxes, re-fitting frame pedistal binders, tramming the frame, new shoes & wedges, new piston & valve rings, rebuilding the brake and spring rigging & new springs, etc.
No.40 is coming due for its second 1472 Service Day Inspection. We decided to "fractionalize" the work, doing the Running & Driving Gear work during the winter of 2012-13. We'll do the boiler & Form 4 calculation work this winter.
We found that the axles, crown brasses & driving boxes were all in good, almost unworn condition. The shoes & wedges were reuseable with a bit of grinding/fileing (note to self: use cast iron or bronze for shoes & wedges, not ductile iron, it galls). The valve rings and cages were slightly worn (but not enough to warrant attention). The piston rings (segmented, "T" section) were worn enough so we didn't think that they would make another term of service, so they were renewed (we made them ourselves this time). The spring rigging recieved new pins & bushings. Although the tires were not yet condemable on "tread worn hollow", they wouldn't make another term of service either, so the loco's wheels were sent to the Strasburg Rail Road shop for reprofiling. To avoid the waste of "service metal" on 7 of the drivers and the trailing truck (flanges thinner that the others), two new tires were purchased from Ajax and applied.
We would be interested to learn what other tourist railroads and museums are finding during their "2nd go-rounds" on their steam locomotives.

We're planning an intensive overhaul of it's running mate, Cliffside 110. Can you share with us the details about how you set up the lubrication of the axles, boxes, etc? We do a lot less than 110K in 15 years so it might last us several lifetimes.

We're also looking seriously at replacing just 2 tires to finish using up the rest of them given the low mileage expected. It's a strategy that I think makes sense for us also.

Interesting indeed. Congrats on your PM and daily service program that is working well. Should be interesting to see the results off your boiler treatment program and how well it worked as well. A lesson in "how to" many of us can learn from. Regards, John.
