Dr. J.J.G. Koopmans' exhaustive (pun intended) history and study of the evolution of steam locomotive front end design and tested theory of how to design efficient front ends that maximize draft while minimizing back pressure has been reprinted in a new edition by Camden Steam Miniatures in the UK. Some minor typos and printing errors from the first edition have been fixed, and a new appendix about multiple exhaust design, engineering and behavior added. This book is a must-have for serious steam people.

I received my author’s copies yesterday. Very well printed and now a 2 lbs book, 488 pages.
For those not familiar with the contents, the first half is a description of steam locomotive front-end development from 1804 to 2004. Although mainly European, the American research of Sweney, Goss, Master Mechanics, Armstrong, Young and the like is also discussed. The second half contains excerpts of the original articles as most of them are deeply hidden in libraries the world over.
The reprint has a new Appendix C with a very painstaking explanation of the functioning of a front-end and the reason why multiple orifices and a proper stack are an improvement.
