Post subject: | New Old Fashioned Cylinder Oil Now Available |
After working on research, formulations and gathering all the right components for about six months now I am ready to offer "Green Velvet" cylinder oil for saturated and superheated locomotives, stationary engines and marine engines. I have two grades - Sapon-A-Max for saturated machines and Sapon-A-Min for superheated engines. This is a true cylinder oil that is made from real "Pennsylvania Grade" cylinder and bright stocks out of the Bradford, Pennsylvania refinery of American Refining Group. They are the last refinery in the country that refines Pennsylvania parafinnic crude oils exclusively. I also use Acidless Tallow Oil for compounding. I get this oil from Geo. Pfau in Indiana. They have been supplying high grade tallows to cylinder oil blenders for about 140 years now. Finally, I mix in a little Polybutene as a "tackiness" agent. This polymer also helps maintain viscosity at high temperatures, improves lubricity, provides a solvent function that helps hold the tallow in the base oil and repels water in wet steam situations. It will not leave residues if it decomposes at high temperatures and is the primary ingredient in "smokeless" two cycle motor oils. While cylinder oils available from the major oil companies might seem to work fine, they are really compounded as gear oils now and most, if not all comply with the American Gear Manufacturer's Association specifications. This means they are full of low flash point additives such as oxidation and rust inhibitors that come out as "goo" inside hot steam cylinders. They also won't tell you what is in their complex gear oils and will change components willy nilly. Green Velvet is a simple oil blended specifically for steam engines and I guarantee the same components and vendors are always used in each batch under a formula designation that ensures you get the same oil time after time. Tests on viscosity, flash and carbon residue have met my design goals and the Sapon-A-Max has been in service for about three months with excellent results. The Sapon-A-Min has not been tested, but the lab results indicate it exceeds the Skinner Engine Company cylinder oil requirements and it is better than Texaco's now discontinued 650T Cylinder Oil 1000 (this is the oil the Durango & Silverton used to use before they couldn't get it anymore). So, I have a lot of confidence in both oil grades. I am repacking the oil into quart, half gallon and one gallon bottles for casual users that don't need too much. I am also packing in 5 gallon pails that can be shipped via UPS. Later, after people try it out and decide they want bigger quantities I will set up for packing in 55 gallon drums and truck shipping. I got my ears boxed on cylinder lubes at Skinner Engine Company 20 years ago in a flap with the City of New York over the Staten Island ferries and have been somewhat of a cylinder oil fanatic ever since. If you want to do your engines a favor and extend mileage on packing rings, rod packings and valves this oil is a good way to do it. I will send more information and pricing to anyone who is interested. Bill Petitjean petitinc@nwlink.com |
