Title says all, silent footage of a new steam-turbine-electric, the last attempt to stay with coal on the N&W: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n0VuljeSM0 The location as labelled on the YouTube post is supposed to be New York, but there is what looks like an N&W designed coaling tower in the background, and some other scenery suggests this might actually be Roanoke. There's also the matter of all the officials posing between 0:21 and 0:29. Can anyone identify the people we are seeing there? |

Upon seeing the words "By Leonard Shaner" in the opening of video on that 2nd link, I closed the browser window without hesitation. This forum would do well to completely ignore this individual, as well as his past 'contributions' here (under his many different names) Jeff |

I wonder if Shaner ever had the right, legally, to post that film on Youtube? He says he purchased the film on eBay, than takes credit as producer? Big brass ones... |

Shaner material deleted. Sorry about that, but didn't remember or know about the character. Too bad--some good images there, including what looked like Winston-Salem Southbound steam, quite a rarity. |

This is almost certainly the first arrival of the locomotive in Shaffer's Crossing, May 22, 1954. See the picture on p.783 of Louis Newton's 'Rails Remembered' (vol 4, Tale of a Turbine). . Newton also notes (p.785): "A large delegation of railroaders was on hand to welcome the new locomotive to the headquarters city of its owner. In addition, representatives of the news media had been invited to the occasion. As a result, the event received extensive coverage in the local newspapers... I believe Mr. Newton is on the left in the scene you mentioned (0:19 to 0:29). I believe we see C.E. Pond at center, with Isaac Newton Moseley to the right. N&W fans should have no difficulty identifying the others. The locomotive then went to the Southern Appalachian Industrial Exhibit from May 26 to 28, where I expect it received more attention from the 'media'. Newton indicated that "Pilcher [the younger], Scott, McGann and Edwards acted as tour guides for the 2300" (p.789) while at the Coal Show. |

I just got a reply from Louis Newton who was part of the Jawn Henry project from the beginning. He confirmed that the date/location of the photo is Roanoke, May 22, 1954. He also identified the six men in the video (left to right): Mickey Sink (no hat) Warner Jamison E. Yancey McGann (no hat) Robert M. Pilcher Clarence Pond Hobart Scott Jr. Mr. McGann is the only survivor of the group today. As Overmod noted, this event is covered in Newton's book, Tale of a Turbine. |
