| Post subject: | VIA Rail Secondhand Budd Purchases |
Overview: In a plan to supplement the Budd cars inherited from CP that had been built for the Canadian in Lot #142 in 1954-55, VIA Rail acquired a variety of coaches and domes during the late 80's and early 90's, both directly from Amtrak and from various private owners. Many of the coaches were rebuilt to HEP and still operate on VIA trains today, but due to budget cutbacks several of the cars remained unrebuilt and were stored in Montreal awaiting disposition. I'm trying to construct a full list of the cars acquired by VIA, both rebuilt and unrebuilt, as well as the dispositions of the unrebuilt cars. ex-D&RGW #1140 Silver Shop is currently for sale on the Ozark Mtn. Railcar website. Having ridden it in the last days of the Rio Grande Zephyr in 1983, the pictures of its current condition make me sad. http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/det ... r-Shop-NEW |

A note about the dome Silver Sky: while in VIA's possession, they completely stripped the car, inside and outside, down to bare stainless steel. All of the interior is gone - not just the bedrooms. Chris. |

I've been poking around on Google Maps tonight-- Silver Sky was last reported to be in storage in Saginaw, MI. As of the 2014 (or late 2013) satellite images, there is a Budd dome lounge observation visible in the LSRC yards with a blue tarp over the dome that is probably Silver Sky. Previous aerial images on Bing maps from a few years show that car and an ex-VIA "Skyline" car (probably "Algonquin Park" also owned by Bill Harman) identifiable by its blue band above the windows in the yard. The VIA car appears to be gone now which makes sense if it is being leased to TVRM. |

Thanks, Chris, for the info on Silver Sky! Several of the domes acquired by VIA were tubed in preparation for the cancelled rebuilds. When I saw the photos of Silver Shop, I was surprised that the interior of that car had not been stripped out as well. Dave-- As reported by Steve Freer in the AOE thread, the Algonquin Park is currently in service on TVRM's Hiwassee River Rail Adventure trips, along with GN dome coach #1331: http://tvrail.com/pages/hiwassee-premium-service |

Current status unknown. *RITS lists this car as being converted to HEP baggage #8618, which is actually UP #5907. Was the #854 stored or converted, and if it was converted, was this a mistranscription of the number, say #8617 instead of #8618?? Regarding the Silver Beaver, it appears that IRM is in the process of acquiring this car: Thread from the Burlington Route Historical Society mailing list: http://archives.nauer.org/archives/BRHSLIST/2012-01/msg00045.html |
