Post subject:  Benjamin Elliot's Coal Trestle

Benjamin Elliot’s Coal Trestle is probably Northern Virginia’s only significant railroad landmark. It was built in 1926 by the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad and was used to deliver coal to local business and residents for about 50 years. Within the past two decades it has become severely over grown with dense vegetation, and thus, very few people know of its existence, much less what it even is. Unfortunately, this structure is located jointly on two properties and recently a frustrated developer demolished a significant portion of this historic structure to make room for his new five story tall storage unit complex.

Just thought I would share this with all who are interested.

Andrew -

Interesting subject. I'm sure that some of these coal trestle structures of different configurations, still exist. I wonder if any museums have them on their property, either original or replicated? Would be a nice, and simple way, to display how railroads delivered goods to customers.
