It's been a while, but until now, we really haven't accomplished a whole lot on our former Reading coach number 1341. On Saturday July 26, I worked with Mr. Watson and a number of other Railroad and Friends of the Stewartstown volunteers to get some long overdue work done. I'll start out by saying that, we are not doing the work exactly as I would prefer, but we are doing enough to hold us over until we can get some additional cash to perform a proper restoration, at least exterior-wise. We worked on the south side of the coach to clean out and apply body putty ("green stuff") to rot along the lower edge of the roof. Basically we are attempting to stop the flow of water to the exterior of the coach so we can install seats, new sashes and sash-stops and sills without fear of them deteriorating prematurely. We filled the major holes over the passenger compartment with green stuff, and we will be going back along the edge and caulk the remainder as best we can. After the green stuff was applied, we went ahead and applied one coat of roof-mastic to attempt to seal up and reflect the sun's rays to most of the south side, although the body filler was not contoured. This will be done and the mastic patched in over it at another work date. During the coarse of the day, I also got a second coat of exterior paint on the five "glassed" sashes, they are now ready for two coats of interior color. I had another volunteer cut some scrap lumber to make a drying rack for the sashes, and then he trimmed the remaining glass-stop molding strips for the next batch of sashes to get glass installed. We still have another 11 sashes waiting for glass! In the near future, we will be ordering window "kits" from a local woodworker/supporter. These "kits" consist of a window sill and a set of sash stops for the interior. Currently I have work days scheduled for the last Saturday of every month, up to and including October. These days have a 9:00 AM crew call, and will consist of ANYTHING relating to coachwork. |
