Probably ex-PFE reefer cars. These were wood boxes upon a steel underframe. And this looks like the wood box only, without the steel underframe.

Brian is right, they are reefers:

Posting for a friend. They have two old railroad reefer cars that need to be removed or salvaged. They are presently being used for storage, he has most stuff cleared out. Lots of iron hinges and door hardware plus they are lined inside. Serious inquires will be forwarded to the owner and you can make a deal with him

would bet the underframe taken for the steel ( like for WW2)

PFE sold wood bodies separate without the frame. The wooden body just sat upon the steel frame.

They then might build a new body of wood (or later steel) to go on the frame. Or salvage out the frame itself.

That made the most sense from the perspective of a farmer buying a shed... The railroad kept the value of the steel underframe, so the shed was cheaper, and the farmer didn't have to haul the additional weight. The CB&Q was doing similar to the bodies they sold out of Aurora, removing the center sills, bolsters, and cross bearers from steel framed cars.

There are three old ex-CPR or BAR, wooden boxcars in a woods, in Lagrange, Maine. Lots of wrought iron and steel parts on the collapsing wood, too. The cars are shot. What value does the metal have, except for a restoration?

The old wooden boxcars I have been in still have the car initial and number stenciled up towards the roof line above the door on the inside.
I would bet these cars still have it in there, too. It may fade away on the wood outdoors, but the stuff on the inside is protected from the elements.
